About The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:

The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a 6-7 days trek set in the laps of in the Annapurna mountain ranges in Nepal. The maximum altitude that will be reached in this trek is 3,210 meters. Hence, sickness like low blood pressure, altitude sickness etc., is certainly off the table. Pokhara is the closest city to begin the trek. Annapurna region is said to be a prosperous region with fertile lands and varying vegetation which is believed to be looked after by a Goddess. Hence as the name Annapurna suggests, the residents of Annapurna Region never starve to hunger.

Since trekking in Poonhill continues through the off-the-beaten paths from Nayapul, it includes trekking through  bamboo and rhododendron forest and diverse vegetation that dwells in the thickets of Annapurna Sanctuary. This route is mostly famous for bird watching. Several local and migratory birds gather in the dense woods. Besides, the culturally rich villages that one comes across allows one to divulge into the many time forgotten cultures, traditions and ways of living.

Home stay facility is available in Ghandruk. The best season for Poonhill trek is during Spring as you will pass through the colourful blossoms that bloom along the path on both the sides.

Arrival in Kathmandu

Enjoy a leisurely stay at Kathmandu and stroll through the hustle and bustle of the streets.

Pokhara (0.5 Hour) – Pokhara – Nayapul (1 Hour) – Tikhedhunga (3 to 4 Hours)

Important Landmarks- Modi Khola River, Birethanti, Bhurungdi Khola, Magar Village.

Begin your trek with a half hour flight to Pokhara. From there, you will be driven to Nayapul which is an hour away and is the official starting point of this trek. A small hike of about 15 minutes by the Modi Khola River takes you to Birethanti that is beautifully placed at a height of 1065m. Proceed amidst the hamlet; to the northern bank of Bhurungdi Khola and engage in a gradual ascend to  Magar Village, Tikhedhunga which is situated at  a height of 1525m. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to get there depending on the pace. This would be the first night halt of the trek.

Tikhedhunga – Ghorepani (2855m) (5-6 Hours)

Important Landmarks- Steep Ascend, Ulleri, Woods

Resume your trek with a steep ascend to Ulleri a Magar Village that is located at a height of 2070m. The uphill climb is a steady one until Nangethanti  which is at an altitude of 2460m. Proceed further into the woods to reach Ghorepani which is at an elevation of 2775m. The trek takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete.

Ghorepani – Poon Hill – Ghorepani – Tadapani(2595 m) (6 Hours)

Important Landmarks- Poon Hill, Sunrise, Annapurna Range, Ghorepani, Rhododendron forests

After a night’s halt brace yourself for the adventurous day ahead. From this place one can witness the mesmerizing sun rise and sun set over the Annapurna range that paints the canvas of the sky red. Return  back to Ghorepani and dig in to a sumptuous breakfast and resume your trek to Tadapani making way through the rhododendron forests. The trek would take about 6 hours to complete.

Tadapani – Ghandruk (2000m)

Important Landmarks- Steep Downhill Climb, Forests, Gurung Hamlet

This day, engage in a steep downhill climb amidst forests initially and then an easy trail to get to huge Gurung hamlet, Ghandruk that  is situated  at an elevation of  2000m. Savour the beauty that surrounds you and divulge in the true spirit of the local culture.

Ghandruk- Nayapul – Pokhara (827m)

Important Landmarks- Downhill Climb, Lake City

Climb downhill to Nayapul. Take a cab from here and be driven to Pokhara (827m) and while away your time at the Lake City. Spend the night in the hotel.

Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Begin early and board a plane from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Reach the international terminal and proceed to your onward journey.  Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek comes to an end.

Accommodations:

It can be quite a challenge to get rooms during the on-season. However, one can always count on cottages and Homestays. There are also various lodges available.

Meal:

In this region, surprisingly prices of food is comparatively higher due to everything having to be transported by mules or beasts of burdens. Dal bhaat, the Nepali food staple of rice, dal soup, vegetables, and pickle sauce is such an energy packed meal you need to look for when you are trekking. Meals costs about 300 – 400 Rupees per person on the trek. Some Nepal street food are enticing enough as well. The menus range from Indian as well as  local Nepali cuisines to spaghetti, bread, omelette, Tibetan bread, porridge, fried noodles, and fried rice, all of them ranging from 300-400.

The price of drinking water is also high i.e. around 80 – 100 Rupees per litre of water, depending on how high in the mountains you are. Many lodges and restaurants offer drinking water re-fills for about 60 Rupees per litre.

Pokhara is the starting point for almost all the treks in the Annapurna Region, including Ghorepani Trek. It is a quick 25-minute flight or a 6-7 hour drive from Kathmandu. From Pokhara, one has to take a private jeep or public bus to reach Nayapul, where they will be dropped off and can go on their way to begin their trek.

Poonhill lies close to Pokhara which is famously called as the Cherapunji of Nepal as it receives the maximum rainfall in the country. The weather in this region is highly unpredictable. So, it is wise to know Poonhill weather forecast before embarking on the Poonhill trek. Winter season in Poonhill lasts from December to February while  Spring prevails from March to May, June to August is the time for summer  and fall continues from September to November.

The months from March to May and October to November are the best seasons for Poonhill Trek as weather remains pretty trekking friendly. Temperature lies in between 28˚C and 12˚C  approximately in Poonhill during September to November. Weather in Poonhill seems mostly moderate or  cloudy in spring season and the temperature ranges from 20 ˚C to 30˚C. Temperature varies from  20˚C to 35˚C in summer season.
