The Tosh River is a branch of the Parvati River, which suckles into the main river at Pulga. Indulge in the scenic beauty of the landscape as you embark on the Tosh Valley Trek, a trail that will leave you mesmerized and take you across the periphery of the mighty Himalayas. As you trod along the trail you will come to realize that you can never have enough of the lush green meadows and dazzling streams cascading down the mountains, thereby,  leaving you breathless and wanting for more.

About The Trek:

Tosh Valley trek is a very popular in Pin Parvati Valley that meets Animal Pass Trek, near Manali. The Tosh valley Trek starts in a narrow constricted valley but as you trek along it unwraps itself and you come across several beautiful meadows. The Tosh valley trek leads you to the beautiful bird’s eye view of Tosh Glacier and snow-clad peaks of Papasura which is 6451m  high & White Sail which is 6446m high. The trek begins at Barsheni with necessary pit stops along the way to  Buddhaban and then the Tosh Village. There are also trails from Buddhaban via Sharam Thach that lead to the challenging Animal Pass and the Tosh Glacier. Both the points offer exquisite vistas of the picturesque mountains, valleys and landscapes gently carpeted with snow.

Arrival at Bhuntar

Arrive at Bhuntar a day earlier, and acclimatize to the altitude as well as the weather conditions. Start the trek from the following day by taking a transport to reach Barsheni followed by a short drive to Tosh Village to begin the trek. The Tosh Valley Trek trail starts a few kilometres further above from the Barsheni village with a beautiful view of Parvati Valley Dam and the picturesque confluence of Tosh and Parvati River in the offing. The trek starts with a gradual climb along the  Tosh river through dense forests of Pine, Oak, Deodar etc to reach Buddhaban. After halting here for rest and refreshments while enjoying the splendour of the streams and the waterfalls, proceed towards clearing leading to clusters of Rhododendron and Juniper. Trek along for the next 4 to 5 hours to reach Sharam Thach which would be the campsite for the day.

Tosh Glacier

Wake up to the shimmery rays of the Sun and gear up for the journey till Tosh Glacier. The trail entails several steep climbs followed by patches of snow which is going to be a challenging as the path becomes quite slippery. Proceed along the gushing Tosh River. After a brief descent, one arrives in Shamshi Thach, a gorgeous campsite at the base of this valley with beautiful views of Tosh Glacier from the North West and Kullu Makalu Peak in the west.The trail back to Tosh village and to Bhuntar from there is mostly the same.

There are various camping grounds available with decent amenities.

Bhuntar is the base location for the Tosh Valley Trek.

Reaching Bhuntar by Road-

There are several Volvo buses run by the government and private operators to Bhuntar. After a brief descent, one arrives in Shamshi Thach a gorgeous campsite at the base of this valley with beautiful views of Tosh Glacier from the north-west and Kullu Makalu Peak in the west. One can also hire personal transportation to reach Bhuntar.

Reaching Bhuntar by Air –

The closest airport to Bhuntar is Kullu Airport which is well connected to Delhi. The distance between Kullu and Bhuntar is around 11km.

  • To avoid frostbite from the biting cold weather, it is advised to wear adequate layers to shield yourself from the chilly winds.
  • Climatic conditions will be different from the plains; take sufficient time to get adapted to high altitudes.
  • ID Proof has to be carried along.
  • Wear proper it trekking shoes for proper grip in order to avoid tripping along the slippery path.
  • Avoid wearing thick socks or multiple socks in order to ensure proper blood circulation at such an elevated region.
  • Do not litter the place and spoil its aesthetic beauty. Therefore, avoid using disposable plastic bottles or items wrapped in plastic.
  • Don’t take alcohol or intoxicating products during this trek.
  • Always carry an additional pair of thermal wear.
  • Waterproof jackets, gloves and boots are recommended.
  • Keep your backpack light in order to avoid backaches during trekking. Only carry the essentials.
  • Avoid trekking during the nights.
  • Show respect to advice of trek leader for a safe trekking experience.

One might choose to visit Prashar Lake during the Winter months of  December to February if one is keen on watching the snow-clad beauty of the mountains. But the trail could be slippery with dense sheets of snow covering the path.  But it looks more vibrant and colourful during Monsoon with different hues of nature perfectly integrated into it.
