About the Valley of Flowers:

The trek ranks as one of the most beautiful treks in the world with the blue PRIMULA flowers, and is aptly called as the “VALLEY OF FLOWERS”.  The peak in high altitudes is a perfect spot for Mountaineers and adventure seekers. This place has a variety of flora and fauna, attractive flowers and the splendid views which will transport the trekkers to a different world with a background of majestic high cliffs and snow-capped mountains. This is the high grand Himalayas of the Garhwal District, Uttarakhand which surrounds this exquisite valley. The perfect time for Valley of Flowers Trek is during the months of mid-July to mid-August.

Valley of Flowers trek starts from an ascending to Govindghat, on the route to Hemkund Sahib and finally till the Ghangaria which is a challenging and an exciting climb. Trekkers capture a grand view of the majestic Himalayas.  After reaching an altitude of 14,300 ft trekkers see a huge clear water lake which is a sheer treat to the eyes and surely everyone will watch the same with awe for a long time.  This secret crowning jewel is a unique habitat and home to different kinds of species of wildflowers like saxifrages, seams, lilies, poppy, calendular, daisies, geranium, zinnia and petunia.

Trekkers also encounter a variety of colorful butterflies during the Valley of Flowers trek. The valley is situated at an altitude of over 3250 m  and serves as a main zone to the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve spread over a lush expanse of 87.5 sq km which is a colorful paradise on earth full of alpine flowers. Mythological legends believe it to be a place where Lord Hanuman had gone to collect the Sanjeevini Buti with healing properties to cure Laxman. Trekkers can listen sounds of different birds chirping and also the buzzing sounds of streams in full flow. About the Valley of Flowers Trek:

An amalgam of dazzling snow capped Himalayan mountains, green and lush meadows, and silver-white clouds make up the “VALLEY OF FLOWERS”. Located at an altitude of 14,400 ft Valley of Flowers trek was first discovered by a British Traveler Frank Smith in 1931. The trek route is filled with flowers and starts at Govindghat, and then passes through Joshimath and the trekkers finally reach Hemkund Sahib. The Valley of Flowers trek is suitable for beginners as well as enthusiastic trekkers. The streams that meander through the valley, and the high altitude tranquil lake, “HEMKUND” at 4329 mts gives an exotic and exquisite overview of the flora and fauna of the region. This lake is a spiritual place for both “SIKHS AND HINDUS”.

The trails will be steeper but the beauty of the seven (Saptarishi) snow-capped mountains will make trekkers feel more charmed and thrilled. Capture the beauty of the of the Hathi parvat and Saptarishi peaks and see the beautiful small stream of Himganga that originates from this lake. The spiritual leader “GURU GOVIND SINGH THE TENTH GURU OF SIKH SAINT, had kept deep penance on the banks of this lake. In the final lap, the trekkers go from Ghangaria to Govindghat and then to Joshimath. Haridwar - Govindghat (3050 m) via Joshimath and Devprayag - 260 Kms - 10 Hrs

Ascend the hills of Joshimath, Devprayag. The day starts at early morning – Gather at the Haridwar railway station and a long drive which is steep ascend from Haridwar to Govindghat commences. Pass by the Devprayag to see the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers to form the river Ganges. Travelers come to Joshimath which is another pilgrimage spot. Travelers can either stay here or proceed further to Govindghat depending on availability of time and convenience.

Govindghat - Ghangaria - 3050 m - 14 Kms - 4 Hrs

This trail is an ascent which will take about 4 – 5 Hours to complete from Govindghat to Ghangaria.  On reaching  Ghangaria stay at the camps or check in at the hotels. Enjoy the beautiful environment and spend the night here.

Ghangaria to Valley Of Flowers and back - 4300 m - 10 Kms - 5 Hrs

Trekkers enjoy the flora and fauna with exquisite blossoms of flowers. This lap passes thru high altitude and starts after having a wholesome breakfast. Trek the majestic peaks at a height of 3,858m to finally reach the Valley Of Flowers. This wonderful sight really mesmerizes the trekkers. Admire the sight of the flowers with thousands of them blossoming in a line. The countless flowers with different shades of colors rest against the exquisite Himalayas. The wonderful and colorful canvas rests against the silent backdrop of the majestic snow-capped Himalayas and many streams flowing through. The rich flora and fauna,  biodiversity of the ecosystem is home to many butterflies, insects, and birds. While returning to Ghangaria pleasant thoughts and memories of the morning trek reverberates. Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib - 4329 m - 18 Kms - 8 Hrs

Visit the holy spot of Sikhs – ie. Hemkunt Sahib where Guru Govind Singh did penance in his life –  amidst exquisite snow-capped mountains. The trail through steep is soothing and calming.  After spending some time have lunch and sometime in the afternoon go back to Ghangaria. Have dinner and stay for the night here

Ghangaria to Govindghat - Joshimath - 3110 m - 14 Kms - 11 Hrs

The day starts with a trek to Govindghat after having breakfast. Trek on the same route from  Ghangaria to Govindghat. From Govindghat drive back again to Joshimath. If trekkers wish they can go to Auli in the evening. Stay at Joshimath for the night

Drive from Joshimath to Haridwar - 1900 m - 152 Kms - 5 Hrs

Trekkers carry pleasant memories of the Valley of Flowers trek. On the return journey,  leave Joshimath early for early onward travel from Haridwar.

By air:

            The Jolly Grant Airport at a distance of 292 km from Joshimath and is well connected with New Delhi. From Joshimath, Govindghat is at a distance of around 16 Kms with an approx. the travel time of 1 Hr. There is good road connectivity to Govindghat.  Even taxis, are easily available from the  Dehradun Airport to Govindghat.

By Train:   

Rishikesh railway station is the nearest railhead which is about 273 Kms away from Joshimath with an approximate travel time of around 10 Hrs.  Rishikesh is well connected with many cities. From Joshimath, Govindghat is well connected by roads. Joshimath is also well connected with Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Srinagar, Chamoli etc. 

By Road:  

Govindghat is well connected by road with major destinations of Uttarakhand. Buses and are available from Uttarakhand like Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Srinagar, Ukhimath, and Chamoli.  The approximate travel time is around 10 hours. From Delhi- Meerut- Haridwar-Rishikesh- Rudraprayag- Joshimath- Govind ghat- Pulna village. There is one more route via Haldane Ranikhet ( Kumaon region) i.e- Haldwani- Ranikhet- Karnaprayag- Joshimath- Govindghat that is around 332 km. Volvo and Deluxe buses are available from Delhi NCR- Joshimath and are around 496 km and take around 13 hours. Travelers have to book in advance to get cheap discounts and fares at a decreased price.

The Valley of Flowers trek starts at Joshimath and can be reached by road from many places in Uttarakhand. There are regular bus services from the Delhi, Kashmiri ISBT gate and buses and taxis are easily available from major destinations of Uttrakhand state like Rishikesh, Pauri, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, Srinagar, Chamoli. The best time to visit The Valley Of Flowers is a monsoon, (June – September) when the flowers are in full bloom,  and the snow has completely melted away. The temperature is 7*C – 10*C. Weather is pleasant during these months. During summer the temperature is 12*C – 20*C, (March – June) and the snow starts melting. This is a good time for a trek to nearby hotspots. The winter starts from  (October – February) and is not advisable to visit this region and the temperature drops to -4*C -10*C. There is extreme cold as the snow starts falling and the night temperature is extremely cold.
